Independent Earthquakes and New Maximums for Strike-Slip Quakes

M8.6offSumatraWith all the recent earthquakes around the ring of fire it isn’t too surprising we want to connect these occurrences as having some pattern. But we shouldn’t, according to Lucile Jones, Science Advisor for Risk Reduction at the USGS, in an interview with ABC News.

She did note that yesterday’s 8.6M strike-slip quake exceeded the supposed maximum previously presumed for such quakes. This has implications for California’s San Andreas fault – but I don’t believe for Puget Sound’s type of faults.
