Vashon's (Winter) Storms

Vashon Winter Storm on 11 Jan 2012Vashon has fall and winter storms that are often accompanied by high winds, and sometimes by snow or an extended freeze. Frequently, downed trees bring down overhead utility lines, disrupting electrical service and communication lines (internet, phone, TV) to various neighborhoods around Vashon-Maury Islands, leaving community members in the dark and cold when they need heat the most.

At times these storms have prevented Airlift NW helicopter service, ferry system operations, and access to ambulance and transportation lifelines such as the West Seattle bridge.

While mainly an inconvenience, these events can spell trouble for those without alternative forms of heat, backup power generators, or water.

Winter Ready 2013 HandbookMaintaining good relations with neighbors and having basic supplies laid in are probably the best solution for not having these inconveniences become something more serious. These storms actually serve as excellent annual reminders for Vashon residents to maintain our emergency supplies - and not take mother nature for granted.

Washington does get other severe weather - including serious tornadoes.
